From shopaholic to spooky

This past week I read Twenties Girl  by Sophie Kinsella, author of the Shopaholic series.

I read most of the Shopaholic series a few years ago and totally loved it.  It's light, frothy, simple fun reading.  (I did not see the film because it looked too different than the books.)  Twenties Girl is a bit of a departure for the author, though: instead of solely detailing the fumbles and foibles of a modern, young woman, it combines that style with a ghost story.  The novel follows Lara, who is haunted by the ghost of her great aunt Sadie, who takes the form of her younger self from the 1920s and tries to get Lara to dress in flapper dresses and do the Charleston (amongst many other things).

The story starts a bit slowly, but picks up quickly and has a very fun plot to follow, even if it's a bit predictable (but the reason I like these books as my light reading is specifically because they are predictable and comforting, like pizza).  It's interesting that the story shows that it takes a woman from the 1920s to show a 21st century woman how to be more confident in herself and find what she wants out of life.

If you liked the Shopaholic series and other books of that ilk (Bridget Jones, etc), then you will absolutely love this book.  I had to be on the waiting list for it at my library, so make sure you put yourself on the list at your local library or pick it up at the store.  Fun read!

16. Read 30 books I haven’t read before (in addition to the above) and blog about them. (15/30) - Half done with this goal!
